Dubois Main Street and the Dubois Museum nominated Dubois for True West Magazine's annual Top Ten True
Towns Award. Dubois, WY garnered the Number 2 position.
In 1890, Butch Cassidy owned a small spread outside Dubois, Wyoming. He often came into town to buy food staples at Welty’s General Store. Welty’s doesn’t sell food anymore, but you can get other things there. And it’s not the only place Butch would recognize if he were still around." That’s one reason why Dubois is #2 True West Magazine’s Top True Western Towns of 2011.
For a town of less than 1,000 residents, Dubois is remarkable. Much of the local history efforts are based at the Dubois Museum & Wind River Historical Center, a living history operation that offers tours to nearby petroglyphs, teepee rings and sheep traps.
